FEW OPENINGS FOR BATTLING EUROPEANS IN HOHHOT

Grand Prix Hohhot 2018

The third and final day of the Hohhot Grand Prix was not the best day for those athletes who began the day seeded number one. In the -90kg category it was current world champion Nemanja MAJDOV (SRB) who lost his quarter final match-up with current Olympic champion BAKER Mashu (JPN). Although Baker won the contest the Japanese sustained an injury and had to retire from the competition. Majdov meanwhile won his repechage contest but then lost the bronze medal contest to Jesper SMINK (NED). There was a bronze medal too for Theodoris TSELIDIS (GRE) who having in his repechage contest defeated Colton BROWN (USA) was then the beneficiary of a bye due to Baker’s injury.

In the -78kg Sama Hawa CAMARA (FRA) lost her semi final against current world champion and number one seed Mayra AGIUAR (BRA). The Brazilian went on to lose in the final against SATO Ruika (JPN) whilst Camara bounced back to defeat Karen STEVENSON (NED) in the bronze medal contest.

In the -100kg category number one seed CIRJENICS Miklos (HUN) suffered a second round defeat at the hands of Grigori MINASKIN (EST). The Estonian lost in the semi final to the eventual gold medal winner CHO Guam (KOR) and, with his first IJF Judo World Tour medal within his grasp, lost the bronze medal contest to Joakim DVARBY (SWE). In the final it was Cho who threw Kazbek ZANKISHIEV (RUS) with ippon seoi nage for ippon, the Russian having to settle for silver.

European athletes were unable to find their way to the podium in either the +78kg or +100kg categories.
