Junior European Judo Cup Kaunas 2018

The 2018 edition of the Junior European Judo Cup in Kaunas saw over 300 athletes from 24 different countries competing. Germany nailed a top performance by taken half of the gold medals with them. Besides 8 golden acts, a silver and two bronzes concluded the German Junior Team. The Netherlands finished at second place by 3 gold, 1 silver and 11 bronze medals. The remaining five victories went to Hungary, Great Britain, Belarus, Serbia and Latvia.

Serbia’s Golden Girl, Andrea STOJADINOV (SRB) won the -48kg category on day one. She started as top seed which allowed her to rest-off the first round. Oddly enough, all of her opponents were German judoka. Stojadinov won all of her three contests by Ippon.

Jonas SCHREIBER (GER) was untouchable on the second day of the tournament. First to suffer a defeat was Erkka KARI (FIN). Krzysztof ZALECNY (POL) was also unable to find a solution against the German competitor which allowed Schreiber to progress to the semi-final stage. Rick ZOMER (NED) was a step away from a guaranteed medal, for which, he needed to defeat Schreiber. However, the German judoka used his tactical skills to set his Dutch opponent for bronze. In the final, we witnessed the longest golden score of the +100kg. To close a very successful weekend, WACZULIK Richard (HUN) and Schreiber went head to head until almost the fourth minutes into golden score. At that point, the Hungarian could not cope with Schreiber any longer and received his third and final penalty. The German judoka did not only excel at all of his contest, but none of his opponent was able to score against him.

The tournament was followed by a three-day training camp. The next Junior European Judo Cup will take place this weekend in La Coruna, Spain.
