NEW RULES: NO PROBLEM FOR GARRIGOS

European Judo Open Odivelas 2017

22-year old Spanish wonder boy Francisco GARRIGOS (ESP) confirmed his place as one of the leading -60kg category fighters on the circuit by taking gold on the opening day of the European Open here in Odivelas, Portugal. Today saw the introduction in Europe of a set of new rules being tested by the IJF. Yet, with such a potentially quarrelsome topic, there was little or no controversy to speak of; particularly as far as Garrigos was concerned. The tiny Spaniard was at ease as he moved skillfully through a field of 30 athletes that included current European champion Walid KHYAR (FRA).

“I was quite comfortable with the way the new rules worked today and I think it left everyone with a positive feeling,” said Garrigos.

On his way to his first European Open gold medal Garrigos (seeded here number four) defeated by ippon first Kimran BORCHASHVILI (AUT) and then in round two Savva KARAKIZIDI (RUS). In the quarter final current Oceania champion Joshua KATZ gave up two scores to Garrigos as the Spaniard earned a place in the semi final against Brazil’s Eric TAKABATAKE. The semi final was close and scoreless going into golden score. In the end it was Takabatake who collected a second shido giving Garrigos the contest and a place in the final. Cedric REVOL (FRA) had come through in the other half of the draw but, in a close contest, it was Garrigos on the back of a single score who managed to take the final.

“I am delighted with my win today as it is a good indication of my preparedness going into Paris. It is [Paris] a very special place with an incredible atmosphere to compete and I am really looking forward to it,”

said Garrigos. When asked about gaining point and moving up the world ranking list Garrigos replied jokingly,

“Well, if in the next two years I can make my way to the top of the world ranking list, then perhaps I too can be in line for the $50,000 bonus.”

Who is to say that he will not.
