Today, in 1987 at the Essen world championships two big rivals met in the women’s under 72 kgs. Dutch Irene de Kok beat Belgian superstar Ingrid Berghmans. The six times world champion got an advantage over De Kok in the match but she was fair enough to correct the referee and De Kok won the match. De Kok and Berghmans are each others enemy on the tatami but are good friends off, joining each other in Essen before the warm-up and after the match as friends.
After her career De Kok completely left judo and started a pub in her hometown.
