The European Judo Union is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Jan Eirik Schiøtz, former president of the Norwegian Judo Federation (NJF). Jan Eirik made a lasting impact on judo both in Norway and internationally.
His journey began as a devoted judo dad at Drammen Judo Club, where his passion and leadership led him to serve as club president. Rising through the ranks, he became vice president and later president of the NJF (2003–2009). At the international level, Jan Eirik distinguished himself as one of two Norwegian judo figures to have held positions in the European Judo Union (EJU) and the only one with a position in the International Judo Federation (IJF). From 2007 he served as Head Director of the Judo for Peace Commission (IJF), continuing to share his passion for peace and understanding through the sport of judo.
Jan Eirik Schiøtz, for his tireless efforts, was awarded honorary life membership of the NJF in 2011 and in the same year he also received an IJF honorary award. Even after stepping down, Jan Eirik remained a steadfast supporter of judo. The European Judo Union extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the Norwegian judo community.
