The city of Kaunas has a broad history when it comes to hosting the best European Juniors. For almost a decade the capital of Lithuania invites the juniors for the European Cup.
This weekend the Juniors will fight for the medals. Former winners are among others Karolis Bauza, who recently won a bronze medal at the European Senior Championships in Budapest, Juhan Metis (EST), Lisa Kearney (IRE), Dzmitry Shershan: all participants at Euro2013. Also Daria Pogorzelec (POL) won the tournament in 2008 and she finished seventh at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Most over athletes from the Baltic region will fight in Kaunas but as it is part of the European Junior Tour the event gains popularity each year. Maryna Slutskaya is topscorer with three victories in the heavyweight category from 2008-2010.
Kaunas is the sixth out of 13 events this year in advance of the European Junior Championships which will be held in Sarajevo (BIH) this year in September. Promissing Lithuanian Juniors are Diana Kiskel, Renalda Gedutyte who both won the European Cup in Tartu in April. In the men’s category Zilvinas Lekavicius is the most promising male talent.
