TWO GOLDS FOR GEORGIA, SLOVAKIA AND SPAIN TOOK GOLD FIRST DAY AT EYOF

European Youth Olympic Festival 2023

On the second day of the European Youth Olympic Festival in Maribor, it was finally judo’s turn. On the first day, the women’s weight categories U40 and U44kg and the men’s U50kg and U55kg competed in the “Ljudski vrt” sports hall. During the elimination bouts, some high-ranking guests visited the competition, including the president of the Slovenian Olympic Committee, Franje BOBINCA, the president of the Austrian Olympic Committee and member of the IOC, Karl STOSS, as well as the chief treasurer of the European Olympic Committees, Peter MENNEL.

In the final fight of the -40kg category, Slovakian Patricia TOMANKOVA defeated the representative of Austria, Nina AUER, by ippon after a little less than two minutes of fighting. Not even 30 days have passed since Tomankova was crowned European champion in Odivelas at the end of June this year.

I feel amazing, it’s a very good feeling to be here and have a gold medal. It means a lot to me and hopefully I will continue the same at the World Cadet Championships in Zagreb. This is a lifetime experience, from Opening Ceremony to winning the gold medal for my country Slovakia. Once in the lifetime, so happy to be here.

Marta BEORLEGUI OSES (ESP) was also crowned with a gold medal, who was better than Begumnaz DOGRUYOL from Turkey in the final of the -44kg category. The Spaniard started the fight brilliantly and took the lead with a throw, as opposed to a waza-ari, only for Dogruyol to come back in the next attack and even the fight. In the 26th second of the gold score, the Spanish representative managed better and threw the second wazari and won the gold medal.

In the male categories U50kg and U55kg, both gold medals were won by Georgian representatives. Shota BACHOSHVILI succeeded in the -50kg category, and his colleague from the national team Merabi SAMASVHILI won the same in the -55kg category.

In final match of the U50kg Bachoshvili met Askhab ISAYEV from Belgium, both judoka were very well prepared in technical aspects of the fight, in fact so good that nothing happened until the second minute of the contest when both received shidos. The Georgian was much more patient and he was waiting for right chance which arrived in the third minute and he captured Belgium in osae-komi which he kept for another 20 seconds.

His compatriot Samashvili had a long bout against Italian Emiliano LATTANZI which went for almost four minutes of golden score. Pressure was on for the Italian judoka as in regular time he already picked up two shidos, however he managed to avoid the third penalty and had a slight comeback in golden score when he made the Georgian pick up his first one. Just one minute after, Samashvili launched an amazing kata-guruma and scored an ippon.

Tomorrow on schedule are women cateogories U48 / U52kg and men categories U60kg / U66kg, competition starts at 10.00h.
