Presentation of the Safe Fall–Safe Schools Project in Pécs

The charity event “Run for Cancer Cure” was held mid September in Pécs, Hungary, organised by the University of Pécs. As part of the event, the Safe Fall–Safe Schools (SFSS) project was featured as an accompanying program. Approximately 3,000 participants attended, engaging in a wide variety of side activities.

During the activities, organisers emphasised that 14 young children die every day in Europe as a result of falls, raising awareness of this major public health challenge. Through playful exercises, children learned safe falling practices while the program also promoted judo as a sport that fosters lifelong physical activity.

At the Safe Fall booth, visitors learned about the program through a continuous presentation that introduced the SFSS App, highlighted key facts and statistics on falls, and showcased previous reports. On the tatami, with the support of judoka from Virradat SE (Pécs) and members of the Kizami Shotokan Karate Club (Pécs), participants were able to practice safe falling techniques. Children could collect a stamp in their official event booklet but only after successfully trying a safe fall.

The event sparked strong interest, with several schools expressing their intention to host SFSS presentations in the future. The SFSS program delivery was supported by the University of Seville, the SFSS research group, the European Judo Union, the University of Pécs and the Hungarian Judo Association.
