European Judo Hopes Tournament & Technical Session Kodokan Experts 2025

“It was truly a wonderful event.”

As the year draws to its close, reflection becomes almost inevitable. In judo, it is as natural as bowing onto the tatami: a chance to acknowledge growth, consider lessons and quietly prepare for what comes next. For the European Judo Union, this sentiment feels especially resonant as one of its most meaningful development projects, the European Judo Hopes Tournament & Technical Session with Kodokan Experts 2025, reaches another successful conclusion.

This travelling initiative has become a thread stitching together Europe’s emerging judoka, moving from one destination to the next with purpose. Each stop welcomes two special guests: a European hero whose achievements spark admiration and a Kodokan expert whose presence anchors the event in tradition. Together, they cultivate a unique environment where young athletes can compete, learn and connect.

Among the distinguished visitors this year was Olympic medallist Ryunosuke Haga, who joined the tour during its Riga edition. It was his first experience as a Kodokan expert and one he approached with both humility and curiosity. Looking back, he described the event simply yet sincerely: “It was truly a wonderful event.”

For Haga, the beauty of the tournament lay in its dual structure. “The young judoka were not only given the space to test themselves in competition but also to absorb knowledge through technical sessions. This balance made the tournament very meaningful and satisfying for everyone involved”.

Observing the U13 and U15 athletes, he found himself impressed by their spirit. “Technical differences were expected at this age, yet what stood out was the boldness with which they fought, their determination, their willingness to commit to techniques and their eagerness to grow. Their attitude was striking.”

When it came to his own contributions, Haga focused on the essentials that shape strong judo: gripping with intention, controlling balance and executing throws with correct kuzushi. He taught the basics of uchi-mata alongside the personal variations that defined his competitive style. The young judoka absorbed it all with remarkable enthusiasm, asking detailed questions, even referencing particular bouts of his. For Haga, their curiosity was a genuine highlight but there was more…

“What moved me further was the natural camaraderie on the tatami. Athletes from different countries trained together rather than retreating into familiar circles, a small yet powerful reflection of judo’s ability to build bridges effortlessly.”

The experience left Haga hopeful for the future. He emphasised the value of such events, not only for athletic development but also for judo’s wider educational role. He expressed his interest in deeper collaborations, noting how beneficial it could be to involve coaches more extensively in technical discussions. Ultimately, he cherished the opportunity to engage with EJU members, federation staff, coaches and athletes alike, calling the exchange “very meaningful”.

In 2026, the movement continues with the same energy. Champions will once again step forward to champion the next generation, offering not just technique but lived experience, perspective and inspiration. There may be no better guides for young judoka than those who have stood atop the most prestigious podiums and now return to share what cannot be written in textbooks.

The new season’s calendar awaits, an invitation to meet real heroes, not in capes but in judogi and as the year turns, we are reminded that the future of judo is already unfolding before us, shaped by eager young hands and guided by those who choose to give back.
