Press Conference Sets the Tone for an Inclusive Judo Celebration in Houlgate

Excitement and emotion filled the room as officials, coaches and media gathered for the press conference unveiling the upcoming Get Together Judo Tournament, set for December 5–6 at the Centre Sportif de Normandie. The event, which welcomes 182 athletes from 11 countries, marks the first French stage of the European Judo Union’s adapted judo circuit and its message was clear: inclusion at the heart of sport.

Addressed on behalf of the EJU, Kristiina Pekkola highlighted the significance of the tournament as a celebration of diversity and resilience. She reminded attendees that adapted judo demonstrates strength in many forms and affirms that every judoka deserves a place on the tatami. Her words set a unifying tone ahead of competition.

For France, the event carries symbolic weight. Gévrise Émane , EJU Education Director and France Judo Vice President, expressed pride that, for the very first time, the Get Together Tour will be hosted on French soil. She emphasised the EJU’s broader mission of building accessible judo pathways and fostering inclusive policies in national federations.

Jean Mesnildrey, President of the Normandy Judo Organisation, underscored the region’s deep commitment to judo’s educational values. He noted that this competition shines a spotlight on athletes with disabilities, a population present in every club yet too often overlooked. He also shared the logistical challenges of staging the first major competition in the fully renovated Centre Sportif de Normandie and the effort required to ensure proper support for all participants.

More than a competition, the Get Together aims to embody its title. With competition, accommodation, and catering all on site, athletes, officials, and volunteers will share a communal, inclusive environment, “together,” even beyond the tatami.
