The European Junior Judo Cup officially got underway today in Sarajevo, bringing together some of the most promising young judoka from across Europe.
Organised by the National Judo Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the event marks an important step in the junior competitive calendar and once again positions Sarajevo as a respected host of major international judo competitions.

As always, the Arena Hills sports hall provided excellent conditions for all competitors, while strong support from the stands added an extra edge to the atmosphere inside the venue. The beginning of February is always an emotional period for those who love Sarajevo, recalling the days of 1984 when the Olympic flame of the 14th Winter Olympic Games was lit in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This year’s competition attracted 304 judoka (202 men and 102 women), with 21 countries from three continents represented. The event was officially opened ahead of the final block by the Ambassador of Japan to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Aiki Toshihiro. Development Director of the European Judo Union, Branislav Crnogorac, also addressed those present with welcoming remarks.

Slovenia’s Nika Tomc once again proved her affinity with Sarajevo. After winning gold medals at both the European Cup and European Open in the Bosnian capital last year, she began 2026 with another title.
“I like Sarajevo, I always achieve good results here. Although I am already actively competing at senior level, this was a very good opportunity for me to test my strength against the best European juniors,” said Tomc, who defeated compatriot Ilariia Tsurkan in the -63kg final.

Serbia’s Aleksandra Andric dominated the -70kg category to claim gold. “I am very happy and satisfied with the gold medal. For me, this was a real test ahead of the Grand Slam in Tashkent,” she explained.
The home crowd also had reason to celebrate thanks to Korina Dzidic, who overcame Russia’s Madina Suleimanova in the -78kg final.
“After two golds in Casablanca, this is an ideal start to the year for me. Thank you to everyone who believed in me. This gives me real motivation to work even harder and with greater determination,” said Dzidic.
The overall medal table is currently led by the Russian team, who secured three gold, two silver and three bronze medals on day one. Slovenia follows in second place with one gold and two silver medals, while Romania currently sits third with one gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
The second and final day of the event will be streamed live via JudoTV.com. For behind-the-scenes content and the latest updates, follow @europeanjudo on social media.
