Winning at home always carries a special meaning. At the 2026 Warsaw European Open, that moment belonged to Poland’s Aleksandra Kowalewska, who captured the -70kg gold medal and stepped onto the top of a Continental Open podium for the very first time. The 21-year-old delivered an impressive performance in front of a passionate home crowd, turning pressure into triumph. Following her victory, we caught up with the Polish judoka to reflect on her memorable day.

How would you summarise your path to the gold medal?
“Stressful. Everything happened in front of my family and friends, so it was stressful, also nice, but in the end it was worth it.”
Let’s talk about the final. It was a very intense fight. Which moment was the key one for you?
“The osae-komi itself, because the grip from above was really surprising me. When I managed to throw, the moment of the hold was crucial to secure it and keep it until the end.”
How do you evaluate the overall level of the tournament here in Warsaw?
“This is not my first tournament here and I know the Warsaw events are always very well attended and strong. That is why I am happy that I managed not only to win a medal but a gold medal, because the last time I finished fifth, which means there is progress.”
What are your next competition plans?
“The Polish Academic Championships in Lublin.”
While Kowalewska celebrated a special milestone in her young career, the Warsaw European Open continues with the second and final day of action. Fans can follow all the contests live on JudoTV.
