Riga hosted the opening stop of the Veterans European Tour 2026, welcoming judoka from 16 nations. Although the number of entries was not at its highest, the competition was characterised not only by strong technical performances but also by a remarkably friendly and united atmosphere. Respect, sportsmanship and a genuine passion for judo were, as always, clearly visible throughout the day. Once again, the veterans proved that competitive spirit and camaraderie can go hand in hand.
Latvian athletes delivered an impressive performance on home soil, topping the medal table with multiple podium finishes across different age divisions. Gold medals were claimed by Martins Plesums (M2 -73kg), Andrejs Buivids (M5 -81kg), Andris Palamarčuks (M5 +100kg), Adzir Mamedau (M7 -81kg) and Aleksandrs Zubcenko (M8 -66kg). Latvian judoka also secured 10 silver and one bronze medal, demonstrating the depth and consistency of veteran judo development in the country.
Ukraine finished second in the overall medal standings with five gold, two silver and four bronze medals. Belgium claimed three gold medals to take third place. Athletes from across Europe and neighbouring regions contributed to a diverse and competitive field, with 15 nations taking home at least one medal.
Riga once again confirmed its status as a welcoming and well-organised host city for international judo events. This is just the beginning of an action-filled year for the Latvian capital.
