The athlete of the second day of the U23 European Judo Championships in Chisinau was Italy’s Manuel Parlati. The Parlati name is well-known in the world of judo, with cousin Christian Parlati perhaps the most familiar. Yet in Moldova, it was Manuel who stole the spotlight, showing not only his best judo but also courage, passion and humility. His thoughts were never far from his family, watching from the stands or back home in Naples, the city that will host next year’s U23 European Judo Championships.

On the tatami, there was a breathless silence before the roar. Then came the raised arms, the smile breaking through the tension, and the gold medal gleaming around his neck. On the podium, 21-year-old Manuel Parlati stood as a proud young man fulfilling a dream.
“I’m very happy because I fought really well,” he said, still catching his breath after the final. “I think this was my best performance. I dreamed of winning here.”
It was more than just a medal; it was redemption. After the disappointment at the Grand Prix in Lima, where injuries and setbacks tested his resolve, Parlati’s return to the top felt like a personal triumph. “Back then, I was struggling physically,” he admitted. “But this time, I was ready. I wasn’t afraid to take risks.”
His opponent, Rajabli, proved tough but Parlati never wavered. Calm, focused and brave, he fought with precision and determination. In the end, it was enough to secure victory for Italy and contribute to an impressive national tally of two gold and seven bronze medals.

“I hope to win again next year, at home in Naples,” he said with a grin that spoke of both pride and promise. Only 21, soon to turn 22, Parlati showed the composure of a veteran even as young Moldovan fans crowded around, eager for his signature.
Behind him stood his coach and a circle of supporters, while at home his family watched with pride, the true backbone of his success. “Everyone supported me today, my cousin Cristian, Giovanni Esposito, Gennaro Pirelli, my brother Raffaele, my father Massimo, and my two friends Matteo and Manuel. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. One more thing to say: Forza Napoli!”
As he walked away, the medal still warm in his hand, Manuel Parlati carried the pride of Naples, the strength of his family, and the quiet promise of a young athlete who has learnt how to rise every time he falls.
