At the European Judo Hopes Tournament in Győr, alongside the excitement of competition, young judoka were treated to a rare and invaluable experience: the chance to learn directly from Kodokan expert and double World medallist, Kazuhiko Tokuno. Across the weekend, the Japanese master guided the participants through the fundamentals of ashi-waza, with a special focus on refining the intricacies of ko-uchi-gari. On the last day, he also focused on teaching the most important parts of seoi-nage.
In Tokuno’s view, the combination of competition and education is at the heart of the project’s value.
“Regarding the concept of this event, I think it’s a real concern that there are kids who lose quickly in tournaments,” he explained. “By holding a seminar together with it, I think it’s a great idea, to focus on judo technique and to use the time effectively.”

His message to the young judoka was clear: while victories on the tatami may be important, the essence of judo lies in its foundations. “For this age group, the first step is etiquette. Body control is the most important thing. At the same time, it is vital to communicate with your opponent, to sense what they are thinking, and to apply that to judo.”
Reflecting on his own role, Tokuno expressed both humility and pride. “I am truly honoured to have been selected for this. I believe being able to participate in this initiative will be a great benefit to me. I really hope this initiative continues.”
With masters such as Tokuno sharing their wisdom, the European Judo Hopes Tournament proves itself not only as a platform for future champions but also as a place where the timeless values of respect, discipline and learning remain at the forefront.
