Cultural Delight for Athletes Heading to Istanbul

The European Championships are on the horizon with less than a month to go, but already other nations are in preparation for the future prime event. Over the course of last weekend during the Tbilisi Grand Slam, the Georgian Judo Federation signed the agreement to host the European Championships in 2026, and in 2027, the judo community can look forward to a multi-sport event, the European Games, which will be hosted in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Already we can expect top organisation and collaboration from the Turkish Judo Federation, given their ample experience, ranging from Cadet European Cups all the way to the Grand Slam on the International World Judo Tour. Now with this exciting prospect, Vice President, Mehmet YILMAZ expressed his great pleasure,

We are very happy that the European Games will be hosted in Istanbul in 2027 and especially for the judo. We will try to have the Senior Event together with the Mixed Team and we are already in negotiation with the European Judo Union. There is an assigned venue for the judo which is really great, it offers lots of space to cater for the athletes, as well as ideal areas for spectators and VIPs. I think this is important during a multi-sport event, as it will give people the opportunity to come and experience our sport.

Earlier this year, the Turkish National Olympic Committee appointed new President, Ahmet GULUM, who stated that this event is important for the landscape of the nation, expressing that sports transcend entertainment or competition, stating that they are a vital instrument for fostering public well-being, national pride, and social cohesion. Not only that, but he believes the upcoming European Games can put them in better standing for the Olympic bid in 2036.

Istanbul, a historically and culturally rich city will be a perfect setting for these multi-sport games, offering a beautiful backdrop and climate, it will certainly be a Games to remember.
