"Curiosity and Effort Decide How Happy You Are”

The European Judo Hopes Tournament is fast becoming a highlight on the EJU calendar, blending competition with technical sessions to inspire the next generation. In Győr, Serbia’s Aleksandar Kukolj, 2017 European Champion and 2021 World silver medallist, takes centre stage as the “European Hero” guest coach, working alongside Kodokan expert, Kazuhiko Tokuno.

For Kukolj, guiding youngsters from across Europe is both humbling and energising. Comparing his second stop on the tour with his first in Baku, he reflects:

“In Baku there were more children and fewer coaches, so the first practice was a little more challenging to manage. Here in Győr, it feels more relaxed, with a very good atmosphere. The kids are disciplined, polite, and eager to learn, it’s a joy to work with them. Together with sensei Tokuno, we go in as a team. It is a very nice experience.”

Although Kukolj stood on some of the sport’s biggest stages, his motivation for supporting the Hopes Cup comes from a simple place: love for the sport.

“I like judo that much that I want to be around it, around judo people, and to give something back. This is one way to stay close, to help kids, coaches, and the sport itself. I have been in judo since I am seven, and I am very happy if judo continues to do well. If I can contribute, that is enough.”

Asked about the responsibility of being a role model, Kukolj smiles.

“The first time kids ask me for a photo was more than 15 years ago. I am proud of it, of course, but I don’t want to be untouchable. I would rather be on the tatami with them, letting them grab my gi, showing them I am here because I want to be, not because someone tells me to. That closeness is important.”

The lesson he hopes to pass on goes beyond any technical element.

“When you are young, you must try things, dig under the surface to find what makes you happy. If you don’t, then later in life you may choose under pressure, and you might miss what truly fulfils you. Whether in sport or life, curiosity and effort decide how happy you are.”

As a coach, Kukolj is fascinated by the hidden details.

“I love teaching the things you don’t see from the outside, the small details that make techniques work. Too often people explain success with ‘he’s fast’ or ‘he’s strong’ but if you dig deeper, you find knowledge and principles you can apply yourself. There are no accidental world champions in judo. Nothing happens by chance.”

The Hopes Tournament is still a relatively new concept, now in its second year, but Kukolj sees great potential.

“In Baku I share my feedback, and here in Győr I see again how valuable it is. Of course, it is still being tested and refined but that is normal. What matters is that so many children, coaches, and countries are involved. From what I see, this project has a very bright future.”

As Győr marks the fifth stop on the 2025 tour, the European Judo Hopes Tournament and Technical Session Kodokan Experts continues to build and inspire the next generation.
