EJU INTRODUCES INDEPENDENT NE-WAZA EVENT

EJU INTRODUCES INDEPENDENT NE-WAZA EVENT

The EJU will be hosting its first independent Ne-waza tournament in Rijeka, Croatia on 2-3 May. Following the successful introduction of the Ne-waza discipline at last year’s veterans European Championships, the European Judo Union is delighted to announce the expansion of this innovative competition format under the name of the Ne-waza Throphy. Details of the exact age requirements and full outline will follow in the coming weeks.

The concept of Ne-waza competitions originated from the IJF Academy, which developed the rules after extensive testing with teams worldwide. This discipline emphasises ground-fighting techniques, offering judoka a chance to demonstrate their technical expertise in a controlled and strategic manner. The rules of Ne-waza competitions are rooted in traditional judo principles, ensuring that this form of fighting remains an authentic representation of the sport while aligning with its modern evolution.

Ground-fighting techniques, or Ne-waza, are an essential and historical part of judo. Over the years, these techniques have also become integral components of other martial arts, underscoring their importance and versatility. By integrating independent Ne-waza competitions into its framework, the EJU aims to honour the rich history of judo while fostering its growth and appeal.

Additionally, Ne-waza competitions offer several practical benefits. They are gaining popularity globally due to their lower risk of injury compared to traditional judo formats. This makes them particularly attractive to recreational athletes and those seeking a sustainable way to remain active in the sport. The emphasis on technique and precision over physical power provides a more inclusive competition environment, appealing to a broader range of judoka.

The EJU is optimistic that this initiative will attract seasoned competitors and new enthusiasts, further enriching the judo community. Stay tuned as we update you with details on the age, rules and other important information.
