The European Judo Union joins the Royal Spanish Judo Federation and the international judo family in mourning the passing of José Manuel Cortés Garijo, a highly respected international referee, dedicated official and a cherished member of the judo community.
José Manuel Cortés Garijo, affectionately known as “Manel”, devoted his life to judo with exceptional commitment, integrity and passion. His distinguished career saw him officiate at three Olympic Games, reflecting the highest level of trust and recognition within the global judo movement. Beyond the tatami, he made a significant contribution to the development of judo through his various leadership roles, including serving as Director of the National Refereeing Commission in Spain.
His influence, however, extended far beyond his remarkable professional achievements. Manel was admired for his kindness, generosity and humility. He earned the respect and friendship of countless athletes, coaches, referees and officials across generations and borders.
The President of the Royal Spanish Judo Federation, Juan Carlos Barcos, paid tribute to his lifelong dedication:
“His passion was judo. He lived through judo and for judo. José Manuel was also a man of great humanity, someone who was always there for his friends. He did so much for the development of our sport, both in Spain and internationally. He was highly respected and he will be greatly missed by our sporting community.”
The President of the European Judo Union, Dr. Tóth László, also expressed his condolences:
“The judo family has lost not only an outstanding referee and a dedicated servant of our sport but also a truly remarkable person. Manel represented the values of judo in their purest form, respect, friendship and humility. His contribution to our sport will never be forgotten and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. On behalf of the European Judo Union, I extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and the entire Spanish judo family during this difficult time.”
The legacy of José Manuel Cortés Garijo will live on through the countless lives he touched and the lasting impact he made on Spanish, European and international judo.
The European Judo Union extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
