In the spirit of preserving the rich traditions and values of original judo for future generations, the Kodokan Judo Institute and the European Judo Union continue their long-standing cooperation. As part of this effort, the annual Kodokan Kata Seminar will take place, this year in Riga, prior to the European Kata Championships 2025.
This seminar presents a unique opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of judo kata. The programme will cover all official judo kata, with content tailored according to the interests of the participants. Of particular note, Kodokan experts Mr Kenichi Shoshida (8th Dan) and Mr Yoshiharu Makishi (8th Dan) will provide focused instruction on Koshiki-no-kata and Itsutsu-no-kata, two of the most profound and historically significant forms in judo.

During a recent discussion, Mr Uemura Haruki, President of the Kodokan Judo Institute, emphasised the importance of kata in the overall educational system of judo, based on the teachings of Jigoro Kano Shihan:
“According to Kano Shihan’s teachings, there are four methods of learning: Kata, Randori, Kōgi (lecture),and Mondō (discussion/dialogue). Kata forms the foundation, it teaches the basics and the application of fundamental principles. These principles are then used in Randori, the second step. Through Kōgi, we gain knowledge, and with Mondō, we gain understanding and the ability to analyse. Dialogue allows the mind to open, and experiences to be shared.
Kata does not have to be limited to the seven formal kata we know. For instance, Nage-no-kata includes only 15 techniques, so essential throws like Osoto-gari are not present. That’s why it’s important to apply the same principles beyond formal kata, including in the analysis of techniques to improve form. Even Uchi-komi can be seen as a form of kata.”
This inclusive seminar is designed for a wide audience, coaches, competitors, kata judges, and notably, young judoka seeking to expand their knowledge and appreciation for judo beyond the competitive tatami.
With the presence of distinguished Kodokan instructors alongside experts from the European Judo Union, both with commitment to authentic judo education, the seminar in Riga promises to be an inspiring and enlightening experience for all who attend.
