Games in Sport

Games are an essential component in the development of sporting skills, offering a dynamic and engaging pathway to learning that extends far beyond traditional drills. In modern coaching environments, particularly within judo, the integration of play-based methods has become increasingly valued for its ability to combine enjoyment with technical progression.

Games in sport are fundamental, not only for enjoyment but also for embedding skills in a natural and effective way. When athletes are engaged, relaxed and motivated, learning becomes instinctive. Movements are repeated without the monotony of structured repetition and key principles are absorbed through experience rather than instruction alone.

This approach was clearly demonstrated during the opening day of the Triglav Insurance Get Together Tour in Kortrijk. Alongside the divisioning process, several training sessions were delivered, including one specifically designed to build fundamental skills through a variety of games.

The session began with exercises focused on creating space in ne-waza. Participants explored both maximum and minimum space through the movement of both uke and tori, developing awareness, timing and control in groundwork situations. This was followed by kuzushi-based activities, where hula hoop circles were used as visual and physical guides to enhance balance breaking and positioning.

Progressing further, the session introduced the methodics of ashi-waza and kumi-kata. Through carefully structured games and activities, athletes were encouraged to understand underlying principles rather than simply replicate techniques, allowing for deeper comprehension and adaptability.

The session concluded with team-based games, reinforcing the importance of cooperation, communication and collective effort. These moments created a sense of unity and enjoyment among participants.

In essence, games provide a powerful bridge between learning and performance. They encourage creativity, reduce pressure, and allow athletes to develop organically within a supportive environment.

Play games, have fun, and grow your skills.
