The “Gospino Polje” sports hall in Dubrovnik once again hosted the best judokas from three continents. The tatami is laid out in the already recognizable red-yellow combination while a total of 308 competitors from 24 different countries compete for medals. The ninth edition of the European Cup for seniors started today at 09:00 with elimination contests in the men’s -60kg, -66kg, -73kg and women’s -48kg, -52kg, -57kg and -63kg categories.
After the first day, Germany showed domination by winning three gold medals. In the -73kg category, Jano RUEBO won the gold medal contest against Zelemkhan BATCHAEV (BEL) in tireless golden score after a third penalty.
It’s unbelievable, I don’t realise it yet, this is my first medal on senior level. I’m quite satisfied with my performance during the day, it was very difficult day as I’ve had lot of contests in golden score especially semi-final match with my teammate with Michel ADAM (GER), we know each other very well.
The 23 year-old Dena POHL of Germany won the third gold medal at the end of the first day of the European Cup in Dubrovnik which was enough for #TeamDeutschland to take the lead in the medal tally. With a difference of one waza-ari she was better in the gold medal contest against Esmigul KUYULOVA (KAZ).
I feel very great, I don’t know what to say, it is my first medal after a long time, I think the last one was in 2019. I’m happy with overall day but still I think that I can improve my judo because I’m physically strong and I’m aware that I can do much more about my movements to be better.
At the same time as the European Cup was being held in Dubrovnik, the Executive Committee of the European Judo Union attended a session, which enabled EJU President, Dr. László TÓTH in the company of the President of the Croatian Judo Federation, Dr. Sanda ČORAK to officially open the event.
