Judo Shines at Rhine-Ruhr 2025 Closing Press Conference

The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games concluded after twelve remarkable days of elite sport, cultural exchange, and community celebration. Drawing over 1.2 million visitors across six host cities, the Games showcased 18 sports, 234 medal events, and a record-breaking number of performances, particularly in swimming.

Judo also made its mark not only on the tatami but at the event’s closing press conference, where two of the nine invited speakers were from the judo community. Germany’s Anna Monta Olek, who captured gold in the -78 kg category, shared her emotions:

“It was just an awesome tournament. The atmosphere in the hall was incredible. My family, friends and many judo fans cheered me on and that totally carried me. I am so happy that I have finally won the title after winning the European Championship and World Championship silver.”

Also speaking was Aaron Jen of Team USA, who was making his debut: “This was my first major international sporting event, and it was truly amazing. The venues were impressive, and it was a unique experience to have the chance to meet so many different athletes from all over.”

The judo events contributed to an overall Games experience that was described by organisers and officials as inclusive, sustainable, and inspirational. With more than 10,000 volunteers, over 120,000 meals served, and hundreds of hours of live broadcasting, Rhine-Ruhr 2025 has been widely hailed as a new benchmark in international university sport.
