July: Self-Realisation

Amid the summer months, we celebrate the next judo value: Self-Realisation. This month’s ambassador is Gyertas Roza, the 2025 World Championships bronze medallist in the -52kg category. In light of her recent success, she is a particularly fitting representative of July’s value.

Self-realisation in judo refers to the profound personal understanding and awareness that arises through dedicated practice of the martial art. It extends beyond physical technique, encompassing the inner development of character, values, and identity. As judoka train, they are challenged not only by their opponents, but also by their own limitations, fear, ego, impatience, or pride. Through consistent effort, humility, and resilience, they come to recognise their true selves: how they respond under pressure, how they learn from failure, and how they grow through discipline and respect. This journey fosters inner balance and a deeper sense of purpose, both on and off the tatami.

In the spirit of judo’s founder, Jigoro Kano, self-realisation is regarded as a path towards becoming a better person and contributing meaningfully to society. The principles of Seiryoku-Zenyo (maximum efficient use of energy) and Jita-Kyoei (mutual welfare and benefit) guide judoka towards harmony with others and a deeper connection with their own values. By striving for technical prefection and personal excellence, a judoka gradually discovers who they truly are, not just as athletes, but as complete human beings.

Gyertyas’ view aligns: “For me, self-realisation in judo means that no matter how different we are as individuals, we can shape ourselves, unlocking the best in us, both on the tatami and in everyday life.”
