JUNIOR WORLDS 2018 PREVIEW 4

As per the -78kg category, top seed will be Junior World silver medallist, Teresa ZENKER (GER). However, there are further favourites for Europe in this weight division. Namely, 2018 Junior European Champion and Junior World bronze medallist, Patricia SAMPAIO (POR). The Portuguese judoka will enter the tournament as number two seed. Karla PRODAN (CRO), TOTH Fanni (HUN) and Shelley LUDFORD (GBR) are also amongst the picks for podium. The outcome of the +78kg category resulted no European medal at last year’s Junior World Championships. This year the hopes are hurling towards Junior European Champion, SZIGETVARI Mercedesz (HUN);  double Junior European medallist, Kubranur ESIR (TUR) and Junior European bronze medallist, Sophio SOMKHISHVILI (GEO).

Junior European and World Champion, Zelym KOTSOIEV (AZE) will lead the draw for the -100kg category with excessive focus on retaining his title. He will be joined by team mate, Adil KARIMLI, but the real challenge will come from Onise SANEBLIDZE (GEO), who has been too busy performing at the senior stage, which now leads him to be unseeded. This circumstance can easily result a Kotsoiev vs Saneblidze first round. Georgia is also sending a duet to the Bahamas with the other half being Zauri KENTCHADZE. Number two seed, Junior European bronze medallist, Daniel ZORN (GER) will also seek to bite a piece of the cake too. The +100kg category will see a real battle of the bests. Top ranked Junior European and World silver medallist, Stephan HEGYI (AUT) has already excelled at the elites as well, with his recently obtaining a Senior European bronze medal too. There are potential challengers in line, such as Junior European and World bronze medallist, Enej MARINIC (SLO) and Junior European Champion, Gela ZAALISHVILI (GEO). Last year, HEGYI lost against Inal TASOEV of Russia in the final. There will be two Russian judoka two fill up the spot of Tasoev this week. Namely, Dzhamal GAMZATKHANOV and Kemal KAITOV.

The event is scheduled to beging at 10:00am local time. On Sunday, the Mixed Team event will be held at the Imperial Ballroom. All actions will be available to follow live online via judobase.org. For all other information and for any changes, please visit our social media sites.
