Kuchar Makes Statement in Paks

Varvara Kuchar (LTU) claimed a cadet world bronze medal less than 12 months ago in the -63kg category. On day two of the Paks Junior European Cup 2025, she cemented her place at junior level by confidently conquering the -57kg division. This shift in weight class demands not only a change in physical preparation but also a significant adaptation in fighting style and pace. While Kuchar has alternated between -57kg and -63kg at various events, her commitment to the lighter category paid dividends this weekend.

Perhaps even more impressive is that Kuchar entered the event ranked world number 111, arriving unseeded. Yet, the 18-year-old stormed through the draw, winning all six of her contests en route to gold. Along the way, she defeated several well-established names, most notably Michela Terranova (ITA), the 2024 Junior European bronze medallist and current world #5. In Paks, Terranova was also the top seed, but Kuchar overcame her in the final, securing a breakthrough victory.

As for the overall medal standings, the International Judo Federation’s team maintained their position at the top, finishing with five gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals. Serbia followed with a strong performance, earning three golds and three bronze. Italy, who picked up a silver on the opening day, surged on day two to take third place overall with a tally of two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. Unfortunately, the host nation concluded the weekend without a podium finish.

Most delegations will now remain in Paks for a three-day training camp before heading to the United Kingdom for the Birmingham Junior European Cup 2025, taking place from 26–27 July. To watch all live action, be sure to tune in at JudoTV.com.
