Málaga Turned into a Hub for World-Class Competitors

Over 300 athletes from 33 countries, including two senior world champions, came together between 11-12 October at the Carranque Sports Complex, turning the event into a major highlight of the European judo calendar and solidifying Málaga’s position as a key hub for international sport.

The city of Málaga successfully hosted the 2025 edition of their annual senior European Judo Cup, an official event on the European Judo Union (EJU) circuit, organised in collaboration with the Royal Spanish Judo Federation (RFEJYDA), the Andalusian Judo Federation (FANJYDA), the Regional Government of Andalusia, and the City Council of Málaga.

The tournament brought together nearly 300 judoka from 33 countries, delivering top-level competition and spectacular performances. Among the standout participants were Timur Arbuzov (competing in -90 kg) and Matvey Kanikosky (in -100 kg), both reigning senior world champions. Their presence was a major draw for spectators and an invaluable opportunity for Spanish athletes to test themselves against elite international judoka.

The Spanish delegation featured around 50 athletes, including many national team members and promising competitors from clubs across the country. Their participation was crucial both for competition and as preparation for upcoming major events such as European Championships, World Championships, and the Olympic Games.

A special highlight of the event was the hosting of an official EJU Continental Referee Examination, making Málaga the welcome stage for the next generation of international referees. Candidates from across Europe underwent evaluation, taking a significant step forward in their refereeing careers. The Spanish Federation warmly welcomed them, underlining the importance of developing not just athletes but also high-level officials.

The Carranque Sports Complex once again demonstrated its outstanding capacity to host international events, offering high-quality facilities, efficient logistics, and an exceptional atmosphere. Málaga confirmed its role as a strategic venue for top-tier judo competitions.

The Royal Spanish Judo Federation and Andalusian Federation wish to thank the Government of Andalusia, the City of Málaga, the European Judo Union (EJU), the Spanish National Sports Council, the Spanish Olympic Committee, and all sponsors, officials, volunteers, and clubs who helped make this event possible.

Juan C. Barcos, President of the Royal Spanish Judo Federation stated: “We are proud and grateful to once again host a European Cup in Spain. Our commitment to international judo is strong and we welcome athletes, coaches, referees, and delegations with open arms. These events showcase Spain’s organisational capacity and love for our sport. They also inspire future generations to believe in the power of sport and the values of judo.”

Carmen Calvo, Vice President of Andalusian Federation, Communications Director of Royal Spanish Judo Federation, expressed her enthusiasm for the event’s impact: “Judo is a powerful tool for social transformation. Events like this are essential for the growth of grassroots sports and provide living examples of the values that define us: equality, discipline, and unity. Málaga has lived and breathed judo these days, and the legacy will go far beyond the competition.”
