In May, the focus will shift to the next judo value: honour. In judo, honour is one of the core principles that guide every action, both on and off the mat. The ambassador for this value is Patricia SAMPAIO, an Olympic bronze medallist and the newly crowned 2025 European Champion.

Judoka are taught to respect their opponents, coaches and the spirit of the sport itself. Winning is important, but it is never more important than maintaining dignity, humility and fairness. A true judoka shows honour by following the rules, accepting both victory and defeat with grace and always striving to better themselves and others through discipline and mutual respect.
Honour in judo also extends beyond competitions. It is reflected in the way judoka bow before and after practice, the way they treat their training partners and the way they carry themselves in everyday life. This deep respect for others and for the traditions of judo strengthens the community and upholds the art’s founding principles. Through honour, judo becomes not just a sport, but a lifelong path of character development and integrity.
Patricia Sampaio shared her own vision of honour: “For me, honour is representing your nation, your family name, and being able to live for your dreams.”
