As we reach the midway point of the three-year Erasmus+ Sport initiative Judo Connecting Older and Younger Generations (JOY), the project is already delivering meaningful change across Europe. With a consortium of nine partners from eight countries, including the European Judo Union, JOY is building bridges between generations through the timeless values of judo.
Since its launch, the JOY project has engaged over 1,800 participants in 16 intergenerational events and workshops. From complete novices stepping onto the tatami for the first time to experience judoka passing down decades of wisdom, each event has captured the true essence of judo: mutual respect, continuous learning and inclusive development.

These promotional events are not merely symbolic. They form a vital part of the project’s wider mission, providing insights and feedback that will inform its key output, a digital educational tool for judo coaches. This tool, underpinned by scientific research, will offer practical guidance on engaging judoka of all ages safely and effectively. Due for release by the end of 2026, it will be hosted on the IJF Academy platform, ensuring lasting impact well beyond the life of the project.
Dr Slaviša Bradić, the project’s lead coordinator, commented:
“We are proud to be part of the JOY project alongside our partners. Together, we are strengthening communities across Europe by bridging generational gaps through judo. Judo is more than just a sport, it is a bridge between generations that builds respect, health, lifelong learning, social skills, and a shared love of sport and community.”
