Montenegro Held The Best EJU Event of 2025

Montenegro Held The Best EJU Event of 2025

On 14 December 2025, alongside the EJU Congress, the annual Gala Dinner brought the European judo family together to celebrate the defining moments of the year. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Best Event of 2025 award, honouring the outstanding organisation of the Senior European Individual and Mixed Team Championships held in Podgorica, Montenegro between 23-27 April.

The journey of this nation began just under two years ago with a European Cup. The lights went out, delays followed but together, everyone pushed forward. Six months later, another European Cup took place, this time running smoothly from start to finish. A few months after that came the final test before the big day, where they proved that they were ready to make history…, and a little over 30 days later, they did exactly that, and they did it in style. The arena was filled with Europe’s elite, the hospitality was exceptional and the warmth of the welcome was unforgettable.

Speaking on the occasion, Jovica Recevic, President of the Montenegrin Judo Federation, reflected with visible pride on what the award represents. “It as a major achievement, not only for myself but for the entire team behind the event and a moment of great recognition from the European Judo Union and its President, Dr László Tóth.”

Speaking of the impact it had on the country he added: “The impact of hosting the Senior European Judo Championships has already been felt across the country. In just over two decades, Montenegro’s registered judoka numbers have risen dramatically, from around 1,170 athletes to more than 3,000 children now practising the sport. This growth is the true legacy of the event: increased participation, renewed enthusiasm and a stronger future for judo in Montenegro.”

President Recevic mindfully noted that this award is not the end of the journey but a milestone. With the Junior European Championships 2026, the EJU Congress 2026 as well as future ambitions ahead, Montenegro has firmly established itself as a proud and reliable member of the European judo family.
