After taking a seventh place in the Tokyo Olympic Games, Peter PALTCHIK (ISR) had to recover quickly to get his head back in the game before the Mixed Team event, where he helped his team to a historic bronze medal.
On the 6th day of the Paris Grand Slam, the judo event saw the -100kg men step on the tatami, and though Paltchik was defeated in the quarter final, he battled through the repechage, defeating Michael KORREL (NED) to face Daniel EICH (SUI).
It was an incredibly close contest with both going on the attack, but Paltchik managed to counter Eich’s signature sasae tsuri komi ashi, to earn himself the waza ari score.
As the seconds counted down, a third shido was issued to Paltchik, but was reviewed by the commission. It was at this point they’d have realised there was an error on the score board, when Paltchik picked up his first, a second one had appeared with it. This meant that in fact, this ‘third’ shido was only the second. Five more seconds passed on the clock until Paltchik was announced Olympic bronze medallist.
I knew there was a mistake so I stayed calm and I’m glad it ended like this, it has been a long journey. Every person that bought a ticket to come see me today, they were a piece of this win today.
