Portimão on Course for Veterans Europeans 2026

The road to the European Judo Championships Veterans 2026 took an important step forward this week as representatives from the European Judo Union travelled to Portimão, Portugal, for an official inspection visit, and the message coming away from the Algarve was clear: preparations are firmly on track.

Leading the EJU delegation were Alessandro Comi, Sport Director, and Tibor Janity, Head of Event Management and Broadcast, who assessed the progress being made ahead of one of the EJU’s traditionally most attended events, set to take place from 22–25 October 2026.

The visit confirmed what many had already hoped, Portimão is indeed shaping up to deliver a memorable championship experience, both on and off the tatami.

Taking on the responsibility of organising a major continental event at short notice is never an easy task. However, the Portuguese Judo Federation has embraced the challenge with commitment, professionalism and impressive efficiency, pushing the project forward with determination from the very beginning.

Driving the organisation is a highly experienced leadership group featuring Catarina Rodrigues, Sergiu Oleinic and Carlos Ferreira, forming the operational backbone behind the championship preparations.

Equally important is the strong collaboration between national and local stakeholders. Alongside the Portuguese Judo Federation, the local organising structure includes Judo Clube de Portimão, led by Joaquim Batista, whose team already carries valuable experience after successfully delivering the Junior European Cup in recent years.

Portimão itself presents ideal conditions for an event of this scale. Known for its tourism appeal and long active season stretching from April through to November, the Algarve destination offers competitors and their accompanying delegations far more than competition alone. Each individual will have the opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere of southern Portugal, enjoy the Algarve region and potentially transform their championship trip into a wider family holiday.

Local organisers are already working closely with tourism partners and local businesses to create dedicated packages and special conditions for participants, reinforcing a philosophy that sits close to the heart of judo and this event especially.

At the centre of the action will stand the Portimão Arena, a venue confirmed during the inspection visit as having exceptional potential to host an event of this magnitude. Its flexibility, capacity and operational possibilities provide the ideal platform for welcoming Europe’s veteran judo community.

The overall conclusion from the inspection was overwhelmingly positive. Strong organisational foundations, excellent cooperation across all levels and clear dedication from every stakeholder involved are creating promising conditions for a successful and memorable 2026 edition.

President of the Portuguese Judo Federation, Joaquim Sérgio Pina, also shared his message ahead of welcoming Europe’s veteran judoka to Portugal:

“Dear Judo Friends,

It is with great pleasure and honour that the Portuguese Judo Federation welcomes all athletes, coaches, referees, officials and guests participating in the European Veterans Judo Championships, held in the beautiful city of Portimão, Portugal.

This event represents far more than a sporting competition. It is a true celebration of the values of judo, respect, friendship, perseverance and self-improvement, showing that the passion for our sport transcends generations and remains alive throughout life.

Portugal is honoured to host representatives from so many European countries, promoting friendship, sporting excellence and the spirit of unity that defines the judo family. We would like to express our gratitude to the European Judo Union, local authorities, volunteers and all partners involved in organising this competition.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to Portimão, Portugal.”

The countdown to 22–25 October 2026 has officially begun. The foundations are in place, preparations are accelerating.

Mark your calendars. Portimão awaits.
