RAICEVIC CLAIMS LONE MEDAL FOR HOST

Montenegrin judoka Novo Raicevic secured the country’s only medal at the Podgorica Senior European Judo Cup 2025, showcasing his prowess in the -90kg category. Despite falling short in the final, the silver medallist expressed both pride and motivation as he reflected on his performance and future aspirations.

Having previously claimed a podium finish at this event, Raicevic entered the competition with heightened expectations. Determined to improve on last year’s result, he set his sights on the gold medal. “Last year I won bronze at this same event and today I wanted to go for gold. I lost in the final, so next year it is. A silver medal is a step up still but next year I want to be on top of the podium,” – Raicevic stated.

Raicevic was generally pleased with his effort on the tatami, though he stressed that his peak condition is still ahead. “Overall, I am satisfied but this is not my final form. That needs to be perfected for April, should I be selected for the senior Europeans.”

This year’s event was particularly significant, as the venue will also host the Senior European Judo Championships. The 28-year-old judoka acknowledged the advantage of competing in a familiar setting. “It’s my first time fighting in this venue and it’s a great feeling to compete here. If I have the chance to compete then [in April], I will have the advantage of already knowing the setting and the atmosphere. For that reason too, this weekend was a valuable training experience.”

A strong local presence in the crowd gave Raicevic an additional boost, especially in the tense moments of extra time. “A big, big, big thank you to my people. So many came to support me and during golden score, I really felt it. I was tired and exhausted but they pushed me through. I truly appreciate everyone’s support.”

Looking ahead, Raicevic remains focused on his ultimate goal: representing Montenegro at the Senior European Judo Championships 2025. “It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to compete at such an event and to do it on home soil would make it even more special.”
