After coming so close to a medal on day one of the World Judo Championships 2025, the hosts, Team Hungary were eager to place on day two. There were two strong chances in the -52kg category, and one turned out to be medal-worthy.
GYERTYAS Roza is the younger of the two entries, but has followed her team mate, and best friend, PUPP Reka for many years, not only an inspiration but someone to lean on.
It was tough in the repechage as both stepped on adjoining tatami, and only one became victorious. Following the contests, the pair exchanged an emotional moment, Gyertyas saddened by her team mates misfortune, and Pupp elated for hers.

Coming out for the bronze medal, Gyertyas looked prepared mentally, with the whole arena behind her, it was difficult to not imagine herself on the podium. It was a tough contest with Ariane TORO SOLER (ESP) who took out the defending World Champion, Odette GIUFFRIDA (ITA) earlier in the day. Gyertyas set up for an uchi mata, hooking in first before executing for a waza ari score and following immediately in to the osae komi. Watching the clock tick away, the crowd grew louder and louder.

After much celebration with her fans, she ran in to the arms of coaches waiting in the wings. Explaining her feeling on becoming World bronze medallist, Gyertyas quickly teared up,
When I came to Budapest, my coach saw something in me, I am so happy that I am now a world medallist.
Breaking through the waves of volunteers and team mates were a special couple,
I was so emotional to see my mother and father, I told them not to come to the arena to watch me because I didn’t think I would be able to concentrate. Then maybe after 10pm last night I let me know they should come. I am so happy that I could use their power and the power of the crowd in my performance. I don’t even remember what they said to me when they came in just now!
It was certainly a whirlwind for the young Hungarian athlete, and it really took a beautiful turn when team mate Pupp appeared and they embraced with tears of joy.
Many people think or probably assume that we aren’t friends, that we are rivals and enemies but she is my best friend. It was a mix of emotions for me today, I was happy to win the medal but truly, my heart was so sad for her. I really lean on.
Moving forward, Gyertyas said something that really highlights her humble origins,
I can really say that no medal ‘gives me more confidence’. It’s a strange thing to say but I always know that I can lose in any moment, instead, I can say that it gives me power to go after the next medal.
In that case, this world bronze medal will be her super power. An achievement like this in front of a home crowd will be something she will remember for the rest of her career.
