Two Ukrainian gold medallists reflected on their achievements and shared insight into their journeys. Competing in the -81kg category, Serhii Karakin delivered a commanding performance, defeating all of his opponents to secure the gold medal.

When asked whether he had expected this outcome, Karakin explained that preparation had played a decisive role. He had recently faced his final opponent during an EJU training camp, allowing him to analyse both strengths and weaknesses and form a clear tactical plan. After winning his opening contest, his belief grew and he began to see that gold was within reach.

Speaking about his preparation, Karakin described a calm and focused mindset from the moment he woke up. That composure carried through the day, reinforcing his confidence after each bout. While every contest demanded significant emotional and physical energy, he admitted that reaching the final pushed him even further, driven by the thought of hearing his national anthem during the medal ceremony.

Karakin’s journey in judo began at the age of seven, introduced to the sport by his father. Although he did not enjoy it at first, everything changed after winning his first medal, which sparked a lasting passion. For young athletes beginning their own journeys, his advice was simple but clear: train harder than everyone else, find inspiration, and maintain a positive mindset.

In the -52kg category, Sofiia Hrechka also claimed gold, though her path was marked by a mix of emotions.

Following her victory, she revealed that her final opponent was not only a rival but also a long-time teammate from the same club. Having known each other for nearly a decade, Hrechka had previously struggled against her, making this victory particularly meaningful and unexpected.

Reflecting on her day, she described feeling unusually well-rested and supported by her coaches throughout the competition. However, in the final, she felt she had to rely entirely on herself to find the solution. The opening contest proved to be her toughest challenge, while the final demanded every remaining ounce of strength.

As per future plans, Hrechka confirmed that her next competition will take place in Austria, a prospect she approaches with excitement and determination.

Overall, the event proved to be a great success, with the Lithuanian hosts delivering a memorable competition. There is a shared hope that the spirit of judo will return to Kaunas once again next year.
