The Unique Spirit of Judo Arrives in Riga

It has been just over six months since Europe claimed 45 gold medals at the veteran world championships in Las Vegas, and now, over the next four days (22–25 May), the continental championships will take place in Riga. Latvia is hosting such an event for the first time, but with a leader like President Mr Vsevolods Zelonijs, an Olympic bronze medallist who not only competed in but also notably won the veteran Europeans, the stage has been set, alongside his team, to deliver an outstanding week at the International Exhibition Centre.

Back to Las Vegas… France secured second place in the overall standings and thus emerged as the most successful European nation at the 2024 veteran worlds, winning precisely 14 gold medals. Four of those champions will compete in Riga: Ludovic Gobert (M3, −100 kg), Sorraya Bekkouche (F2, −78 kg), Françoise Dufresne (F9, −70 kg) and Mohamed Halabi (M8, −73 kg). The latter will travel to Latvia to defend his continental title. Three of Germany’s five newly crowned world champions will also compete in their respective categories: Anja Dorothee Uehlein (F6, −78 kg), Sylvia Hackel (F7, −57 kg), and Theodor Keppel (M9, −90 kg).

Now, with nearly 900 competitors, there are plenty worth mentioning, including the presence of the ‘usual suspects’, such as multiple-time veteran European and World Champion, Hendrik Koppe (M7, +100kg), who is on a solo mission from the Netherlands. A similar résumé is held by Farhad Rajabli (M8, -90kg), who always flies the flag of Azerbaijan with pride among his teammates. There will also be plenty of newcomers joining this unique environment of the gentle way. The ne-waza event is expected to attract many participants too, setting up a different opportunity to all.

There are countless individuals at the annual veteran continental event who hold not just one, but multiple veteran titles. Yes, some are proudly decorated with medals, and yet, this event transcends accolades. It is a powerful testament to their enduring love for the sport of judo. These individuals often fund their own journeys, travelling across Europe and beyond, not for fame or fortune but for the sheer joy of participating in a sport they hold dear. For most, judo remains a passionate pursuit, not a profession. Some are even retired, yet they continue to find fulfilment and purpose on the tatami.

The true beauty of this event doesn’t lie solely in the achievements of champions. It lies in the quiet dedication of individuals who give their all, time, energy, and heart, for the love of judo. To continue pushing the limits of the body and mind at 60, 70, or even 80 years old is nothing short of extraordinary. It is a living testament to the strength of their spirit and the unbreakable bond they share with this sport.

The host nation will embark on this 4-day journey with 28 competitors. In case it is your first time joining such an event, be sure to read the outlines and for all live actions, tune in via judotv.com
