The morning of the EJU Get Together Velika Gorica 2025 burst into life as Level 4 and Level 5 participants stepped onto the tatami, ready to showcase their spirit, skill and determination. What followed was more than just a display of judo excellence, it was a celebration of joy, resilience and community. The air was filled with applause, cheerful shouts and spontaneous, heartwarming celebrations that lit up the venue and reminded everyone why this event is so special.

Mia Petreš of Serbia made her debut today, attending her first-ever judo event. Her journey to the tatami is a powerful one. Just two years ago, her parents were unsure whether judo was the right sport for Mia. However, a little over a year ago, coach Sajonela Krga, who also happens to be Mia’s teacher at the special school she attends, managed to persuade them to give it a try. Needless to say, Mia’s parents are now both delighted and proud of what judo has brought into their daughter’s life. The 12-year-old judoka was born prematurely and, as a result, lives with severe autism and some additional challenges.
Despite the odds, Mia’s debut performance earned her second place in her weight and group division. Afterward, she shared her joy:
“Today was beautiful. I was very nervous but I like training and everything. I love my coaches a lot.”
Coach Krga continued:
“It is a big day for us today and I am incredibly proud of her not just for how she performed on the tatami, but for how far she’s come. When she started judo last year, she didn’t like to throw anyone and was very shy. She didn’t enjoy school, didn’t like being around others, and used to cry often. But today, she was a true fighter confident, social and smiling. Her progress is amazing. Every day she draws pictures of the two of us in our judogi, and I know she will proudly wear her medal to school tomorrow and probably for many days after. This is also the first time she’s stayed overnight away from her parents, travelled for a tournament, and she handled it all beautifully. It’s all just… wow.”

The afternoon session is underway with all competitors from Level 1 – Level 3 divisions. Watch live online via the EJU Youtube Channel.
