SULCA SECURES HIS JUNIOR EUROPEAN TITLE IN LUXEMBOURG

There was a great chance for Adrian SULCA of Romania to become Junior European Champion in the -73kg looking at his results this year. It was a tougher-than-usual day for him but that didn’t stop him on his road to gold on day two.

The #3 seed pulled out a gold medal in the Coimbra Junior European Cup but had been preoccupied on the senior circuit, also finding golden success in the Prague and Zagreb European Open events. This preparation served him well though he could note the difference in tactical ability.

All contests were won by ippon but two were a result by penalty accumulation of his opponents. He was off to a positive start in his first contest against Kantemir KHAZHMETOV (RUS) but a lack of experience was the downfall of Ion TONOFREI (MDA) and Javier PENA INSAUSTI (ESP).

The semi-final against eventual bronze medallist, Vincenzo PELLIGRA was a quick affair for Sulca, securing the win in under one minute in ne waza.

In the other semi-final, Jus MECILOSEK (SLO) put in the performance of the day, scoring ippon in four seconds to find his place in the final against Sulca. This was a more difficult situation for the Romanian, who was taken the full four minutes of the fight. Though he was the clear lead and dominated the contest he was struggling to execute any scoring techniques and waited for an unbalanced attempt from his opponent which he countered to score waza ari. The aim was to keep that score and stay positive while the clock ran down.

It was a well earned Junior European title for Adrian Sulca who will now go on to try his luck in the Junior World Championships in Olbia, Italy next month.
